March 2010
Redfish,Redfish is the only game in town. The trout bite has been slow and will improve when the weather will ever warm up. Come on springtime!!! The redfish are in the shallow ponds in full force. I have been catching so many I pulled out the fly-rod and whacked them on it. The bass and sacalait are getting ready to bust wide open as soon as the water temp gets in the 60's when ever that may be. Good Luck Fishing...
January 2010
We certainly can't blame it on the weather. We have had some of the coldest and hardest fronts that we have seen in a while. A good duck guide has to have a full arsenal of excuses..lol. not enough wind , it's too sunny, too windy, too foggy, no hunters to keep the ducks moving, too may hunters, water too low/high. I've had to use all the above this season, it has been hard for me also sitting in the blind looking out at empty skies. The New Year's day started off with a bang though, ducks everywhere....teal, grays, and the pintail we have not seen all season showed up in numbers. 2-man limit easy and let ducks land in the decoys all morning. Then on the next day we shot (1) duck between 3 blinds..... go figure!! Then we didnt hunt the best days on Wed, Thurs. the 6th and 7th. But went on the 8th in the ice and didnt fire a shot. No water, decoys in the mud and could barely get to the blind. Where are the ducks????
Again , thanks for the redfish. We have had much better CASTING than BLASTING. Who knows what the last weeks of the season will bring. We will be out there hopefully Blasting but catching for sure....
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!
Good Luck Hunting!!!
December 2009
Well this duck season has been full of highs/lows, mostly lows.....In-consistent from day to day. Limits one day and then 4 or 5 ducks the next. We never really got our big ducks like last season. We really depended on teal to scratch out a stringer of ducks. Opening day of the second split we shot limits from one blind and 12 ducks in the other. The week of Christmas it was shoot 5 or 6 ducks early and you were wasting your time in the blind, where as last season our best hunting was 9-11am(due to large numbers of late flying big ducks). The redfishing has made up for the slow duck hunting. We have really worked over the redfish. On most days they were in large schools 50-75 fish in the shallow ponds and were eating anything you threw. Only when the water fell hard could we catch them in the deep canals.
The second split of the duck season will open on Dec. 19 th and we have large numbers of ducks just waiting to be shot. These fronts and the 2-week break will make the second split much better than the first. The redfish are moving back and forth from the ponds to the deep canals depending on the weather. We caught reds non-stop for 2 hours, I mean every cast during the last front in the canals. Then 2 days later they were back in the ponds where we could sight fish them again. Come get in on the action!!
November 2009
We got ducks!!!!We got redfish!!!! Come and Get Em!!
Sunday the 22nd we had (3) groups and ended up with 54 ducks. Grays, mottled, spoonies, bluebills and teal. We still are waiting on the arrival of our pintail, widgeon, redheads and canvasbacks. They will be here come the second split. The redfish are aboslutely on fire!! Schools of tailing fish. We are fishing from a 4' ladder in the boat and catching fish at will. Schools of up to 20 fish all in 1' of water, and they are BIG!!!! We are catching them on Saltwater Assassin swimshads in the Chicken on a Chain color. Come get in on the action. We still have openings for Blast and Cast!! Hope to see you.
Well the ducks are finally showing up in numbers..... We have lots of teal, gadwall and mottled ducks. The youth hunt was a blast with the kids. Did you ever try to hit a duck with a .410 well how the heck do I expect them to. Well they did manage to hit a few ducks and coots. Then the redfishing was on fire!! Sight casting.
We had Mr. Paul Lombardi out with his flyrod...and he smoked them on it. I would spot the fish and have him send the fly in there. Man what a sight!!! Duck season opens this Saturday, reports to follow...
October 2009
Redfish are still loaded in the shallows, and with the water temps dropping it's just going to get better. I had Lori Brian and crew down on October 24th and the redfish were eatin it up. They were in 6-8" of water and crashing minnows and mullet. Gold spoons and spinner baits were the ticket. Also spent the rest of the week building duck blinds getting ready for duck season. Can't wait till November 14th!!!!
September 2009
This is the month where the redfish rule!! Large schools of fish tailing and easy to catch. They are everywhere on my duck lease, how convenient being that teal season will be opening on the 12th. Shoot teal and catch redfish all in the same morning. This week we were getting an early start building some new blinds and got into the redfish hot and heavy.
July/August 2009
Well the fishing has been fantastic all t/o July and into August. With the full moon and heavy tides the first days of August the fish have been on fire. We had 100 trout on the 4th and all of the big ones were still full of eggs. the shrimp are everywhere and the trout are eatin em up. Birds diving all along the coast as far as you can see, with shrimp and trout flying everywhere. We caught numbers of keeper trout on soft plastics tandem rigged. But the big fish were caught using a chartreuse she dog topwater bait. The best 10 fish went 35lbs.... that's good fish for Cocodrie. The only problem was the sharks were eatin topwater baits too..Man what an explosion a 4' shark makes on topwater. If that's not enough action, the bull reds are schooling up along the beaches getting ready to spawn. 100's of fish in the 15-30lb range, man what a sight, the water turns red.......
June 2009
The only thing hotter than the weather is the fishing!! Man the speckled trout and redfish are on fire. The reds are in giant schools and are eating whatever you throw near them. Try Lake Boudreaux shorelines and any duck ponds with clean water North of lake Boudreaux. The schools are easy to spot, 100- 25"-40" redfish make a nice commotion coming through the water, trust me!! For the trout just head out to any of the last Island chain out of Cocodrie and fish the south side beaches. Look for diving seagulls and shrimp skipping out of the water. Also try the wellheads in Terrebonne bay. Use 1/2 oz leadheads with your favorite plastics to cover water. Make a few cast on all sides of wellhead and move to the next one if you don't get bit quick. I have been using Saltwater Assassin 6" jerk shads in pearl and black. The larger trout eat em up.
May 2009
Fished May 22nd with Paul Kraus and the Seacor marine crew for the 2009 Oilman's rodeo. We had a steady day of catching redfish, ending up with 23 nice fish. Fish were caught on a variety of lures all fished over shallow grass. We didn't get the big ones under 27" we were looking for due to lack of visibility. The sun stayed behind the clouds making us blind cast. Lots of fun with a great crew onboard.
Fished with close friend Neil Whitley with Baker Oil Tools from Houston on the 21st. We got on some nice schools of big redfish. The sun was out and it was on. Casting to visible redfish cruising 5-10' from the boat. They would slam anything, but you had to put it on their nose. We had our 10 fish by 8am and went riding and looking. Nice to catch up with Neil, we only get to fish together for the Oilman's rodeo.
Fished with Shawn Rogers and crew on the 11th out of Chauvin and hit the mother lode of redfish. We started out picking up a few fish and found the HOTSPOT.. Schools of 50-100 redfish all tailing, it was awesome. We would have multiple hook ups each time we found the school. They would just run down the grassline and start tailing again, we repeated that till we had caught our limit and released another limit. It didn't matter what you threw at them, it was ON.....What a great day of fishing.
Fished with Mr. Ron Leo and his two sons and one of their buddies on the 9th. We put them on some nice reds in Lake Boudreaux. Fish were caught on live minnows and fresh shrimp under a rattle cork. After dropping them off I headed down to Cococdrie and picked up Hunter Shaffett with Night Rider Bowfishing charters. We headed out to Timbalier for a little trout action. The first wellhead we stopped at had some nice trout and redfish. We put 30 nice trout on ice and had to head in for Hunter to run a bowfishing trip. Trout were caught on live minnows with a carolina rig, until we ran out and then caught them with Chicken on a chain saltwater assassins.
Fished with Mr. Dickie Esquiveld out of Chauvin on the 7th. Found the redfish in the shallow grassy ponds. You had to hit them on the nose to get a bite. You could tell why, there was so much bait for them to eat they had a stomach ache..We caught fish on gold spoons and jerk baits. Lots of action and ended with 12 reds and a few trout and drum in the mix..
April 2009
Had Allen Thompson and crew down on April 24th for a windy day in Dularge. We found some clean water and starting putting some nice redfish in the box. Fish were caught on gold spoons, swim baits and spinner baits. Being the fishing was so tough we even broke out some shrimp and put a spanking on the sheephead. Ended the day with a fish box full...........and some happy faces.
On April 25th I had Mr. Herman Oufnac and his mother Mrs. Angelina from Baton Rouge. We took the small boat out behind Lake Boudreaux for another windy day. Started the day off missing the first 3 bites fish hooked up but coming off right away. After the sun got up a bit we started seeing lots of big fish but most were just laying in the holes in grass on the bottom. You had to hit them on the nose to get a bite. We managed to put 8 keepers in the boat and released 3 more fish that were over 27", not bad for a windy day. All fish caught on weedless swim baits. Thanks to the Oufnacs for a great day on the water.
On the 14th Mr. Dickie Esquiveld and crew came and we went to Chauvin in search of redfish and trout. another day of 20mph winds, this time out of the north. We got on a steady trout bite on DOA shrimp and live minnows under a cork. We managed 20 trout and then went in search of Austin's first redfish. I took them to my duck lease in hopes the water would be high enough to float the big Champion into. Well we eased in there and started seeing, and catching a few redfish. Austin got to catch his first redfish and man it was a handful. We all had a great time and caught a mess of fish under some tough conditions.
Well the word for April is WINDY!!!! We have dealt with heavy south winds and torential downpours. Mr. Barry Willis and crew came all the way from Tennessee to catch some redfish. Well the night before their trip we had 12" of rain on top of 25mph south winds. We had our work cut out for us to say the least. Well we managed to put together 10 nice redfish. All fish were caught on Luck E Strike swimbaits on weedless hooks. We had to find grass and clean water. The fish were as far back in the marsh as you could get. We had a great time.
March 2009
Well the bass and sacalait spawn has come and gone. It's time to get back to the business of redfish and speckled trout fishing. The redfish are stcked up in the shallow ponds in most coastal areas of Dularge, Montegut and Chauvin. Just look for clear water with grass. Throw the old "stand-by" 1/4oz johnson silver minnow spoons in gold color, and gold bladed beetle spins with your favorite plastic lure. When sight fishing use weighted hooks with Zoom flukes or Luck E Strike swimbaits to drop on the fish nose. Cover water fast looking for signs of fish. You will find them as they are every where................Good Luck Fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 2009
Now that duck season is over we are back running fishing trips. The redfish will be loaded in our private canals through April. Limits of redfish are being caught on every trip!! During low water and cold weather we are fishing the canals with shrimp. When the water rises I am following the reds into the shallow ponds. Sight fishing with gold spoons and beetle spins. If it's trout fishing you prefer, they are just a short boat ride from the redfish holes. Trout are biting on DOA shrimp under a cork and soft plastics dragged along slowly. LSU colored chub minnows , smoke colored sparkle beetles, and baitfish colored Zoom Flukes have worked the best fished on Saltwater Assassin jig heads.
December 2008
We have been doing our Cast and Blast trips, duck hunting and fishing all in the same morning. Man what a deal. We are having to stay in the blind late but are being rewarded with nice stringers of ducks. The redfish are loaded in our private canals, and the speckled trout are in the area bays. The redfish are being caught under a cork with soft plastics tipped with fresh shrimp. Our trout are being caught under Cajun thunder corks with DOA shrimps and double rigged plastics on the bottom. Come and get in on the action, our duck season will run through Jan.18th 2009.
November 2008
Fall fishing is here and it's on FIRE!!! Whatever it is your after it's biting. The speckled trout are in the shallow bays chasing shrimp to fatten up for the winter. Redfish are everywhere..... I have never seen so many speckled trout feeding, literraly jumping out of the water in between cold fronts after a few days of warm weather. The redfish are in the ponds when we have water and when we get a good cold front they are stacking up in the deep canals.
Duck Hunting
We have been doing well on the ducks, shooting gadwall, widgeon, blue and green winged teal, mottled ducks, pintail, shovelers, bluebill, etc. What a variety of ducks!!! Who wants to just shoot mallards, boring............... What a day, start in the duck blind shooting limits of ducks and end chasing fat redfish and speckled trout. We have it all, come get in on the action. Our duck season is open through January 18th, SWEET.................
October 2008
The names Ike and Gustav spelled disaster to south La fresh water fishing. Things were getting back to good finally from Katrina and Rita. Now we will have to start over again, what a waste all the bass and other species that were lost. The good news is that we are seeing an early migration of speckled trout into the interior areas. Hot spots are Lake Decade, Mechant and sister Lake. The redfish were stacked up at the mouths of bayous dumping into lakes and bays. The trout can be found by watching for birds and jumping shrimp. I had the pleasure of fishing with Bruno del Bueno and crew from Texas with Gator Completions. We made short work of a 25 redfish limit 2-days in a row. Most fish were caught on beetle spins with purple/chart. bayou chub minnows and some on the old reliable fresh shrimp. What a great group of fishermen and fisherwoman..
September 2008
Hurricanes Gustav and Ike really let us have it. The thursday before Gustav I made a trip to my duck lease and the teal and redfish were everywhere. I have never seen so many redfish tailing in 1' of water in my life. Boy were they hungry too. I caught 30 fish mostly 27-35" long in a matter of 2 hours. I used a 1/8oz screwlock saltwater assassin jighead and a queen H&H cocahoe minnow in black/chart. Man were they loaded. Will post another report when the water gets back to normal levels.
August 2008
Had Ronnie Fontenot and crew from Opeluses on August 2nd. Some of the crew had never caught a redfish. The bite started slow as all we could catch were bass. Then when the tide started coming in the redfish made a push into the ponds where we worked on them pretty good. Ended up a few fish short of a 5 man limit. Most fish caught on spinner baits with purple/gold bayou chub minnows. Great group of guys to fish with.
July 2008
Helped out Capt. Marty with a large group of guys on a bachelor party out of Dularge on July 19th. We headed out to the ship Shoal rigs for some early trout action. Man was it slow we caught 2 fish at our first stop and the bite went cold. We ended up all the the way West to Eugene Island field. The redfish were stacked up at all the platforms. You would reel one up and 5 or 6 would be trying to take the bait out of his mouth. We would have 4 fish hooked at a time, loosing lots of them to breaking lines on the rig legs. The wanted Tsunami minnows in the ultra clear water. We ended the day with 15 redfish and 20 trout and an assortment of drum, pompano, and spanish mackeral. Thanks Capt. Marty for setting up the trip.
Fished with Jimmy Daniel and crew from Franklin on July 17th out of Cocodrie. We started the day at Last Island and the trout were on fire!!!Every cast 2 at a time with a mixture of keepers and throwbacks. We ended the day with a nice mess of trout, redfish and flounder.
Fished with Eddie and Gale from Biloxi Ms on July 16th out of Cocodrie. Started on the East end of Last Island to a fury of speckled trout action. The shrimp were getting it from both ends, seagulls up top and hungry speckled trout below. We made short work of our 75 trout limit and had a great time. Tandem rigged purple chart and avocado/chart bayou chub minnows did the damage.
Fished with Mr. Rudy Aucoin and crew from Baton Rouge on July 6th. We went out of Cocodrie to Last Island in search of speckled trout. Just as soon as we found them one of the nastiest T-storms was looming over the whole coasline and headed our way. Well we packed it in and headed North to avoid the weather and catch some redfish. We went to lake Boudreaux and scratched out 10 redfish to add to the 25 trout from the morning. Rudy is always a pleasure to have in the boat. Never a dull moment.
Fished with Mr. Randy Fawcett and crew from Center TX on July 4th and 5th out of Cocodrie. On July4th We went to the wellhead structures in Terrebonne bay trout fishing. We had a great tide range of 1.4'. The trout were chasing shrimp and baitfish all over the water. They would eat any color soft plastic you had. We probaly caught 5 small fish for every keeper size fish put on ice. We ended the day with 70 nice keeper trout. Then on July 5th we decided to stay inside and catch redfish. We went to Sharky's Landing in Chauvin and went to lake Boudreaux. Man did we find a large school of redfish. They were in schools of 50-100 redfish all 10-15lb fish. It was amazing seeing all those tailing redfish in 1' of water. We would get 1 maybe 2 fish from the school and they would tear down the bank scaring everything in sight. They were destroying a black/chart. she dog topwater bait, 1/4oz gold spoon and H&H beetle spins with purple/chart Reaction bayou chub minnows. We ended the day with 25 nice reds and a few specks, drum and sheephead. What a great group of guys to fish with.
June 2008
Fished with my wife and kids on the 24th. Well we really went out to Timbalier Island to do a little playing on the beach and got in a little fishing also. We started at the wellheads and the sharks were "out of control" at every stop. We didn't get out till late and had no tide range so the kids had a ball with the 1000's of hermit crabs on the beach. On the way in we made one last stop and found some beautiful trout in the 3-4 lb range. My first cast hooked up with 2- 4lb trout on my tandem rigged zoom flukes. They were both tail walking in opposite directions and one broke off. I managed to put one in the net. I trolled out and dropped anchor. Then Kelly and the kids got in on the action. Drag pulling trout!!!! I stayed busy baiting lines, netting fish and watching out for flying hooks. The action ended quick as those big trout are very wary and moved off. We had 15 fish and went back into Cocodrie to miss the storms that were building.
Fished with Austin Hebert and crew on the 9th and 10th, they were on their senior trip. We took off in search of redfish and found them hot and heavy. We located a school of several hundred tailing redfish. When the wind layed down you could see them 300 yards away. They were monsters, 10-15lb fish all over 27" long in 1-2' of water. We had multiple hook-ups, you know the drill fish under the boat, motor and crossing lines. It was the largest school of redfish I have ever seen!!! We even managed an afternoon trip for trout and ended up with 20 specks and 50 white trout. The guys were a lot of fun, Congratulations on graduation and Good Luck in the real world guys!!!!
Thanks to Bryce Michele with Topwater Charters for setting up 3 days of fishing. Had the pleasure of fishing with Star Services. 3 days of windy conditions forced us into the marsh for redfish. 13 boats turned in 160 redfish, and an assortment of sheephead, flounder, black drum and speckled trout. We did well on H & H beetle spins with bayou chub minnows in purple with chart. tail and gold spoons. The redfish were on windy banks with grass that were holding pockets of clear water. My group ended up with the heaviest speck of the day right at 3lbs.
May
May 23-24th Fished the Oilman's Rodeo out of Cocodrie and Dularge with PSC Services. The mornings started off fast and furious redfish coming in the boat 2 and 3 at a time with bass in between reds. They were in the grass beds any where that we found clear water and eating up the beetle spins with purple/chart bayou chub minnows. We had 4-man limits of reds by 7:30 both days and released 20 or so bass. Finishing early we took a ride out looking for trout but found lots of rough water. Managed 15 trout and they guys were ready to head it in for some fine eating.
May 25-26 Took the family down to Grand Isle and got into the nice trout around the Caminada jetties. No wind but large ground swells made for a bumpy trip. As always never go to Grand Isle w/o live bait. They were eating up carolina rigged crokers.
Fished with Mr. Tom Steffner and crew from Chattanooga May 9th and 10th. Those guys know how to travel. They flew into Houma on their jet and were ready to catch some fish. Only after eating at Big Al's......... The trip started off slow but all hell broke loose. We found the mother lode of redfish. I happened to look and see Mr. Tom's spoon get smoked by a large red that had 20 more with him, I chunked mine in and got bite immediately and made the call for everyone to cast in that direction. Well what happened next was everybody onboard fighting a big red. Lines crossing you know the drill, line under the motor. Well we managed to land all of them, and that went on until we had 30 fish in the box. we fished on saturday and had the same non-stop action....
The redfish are loaded in the ponds north of Lake Boudreaux and around Montegut in Madison Bay. They are eating anything you put in front of them. The speckled trout are on the beaches of last island and are biting with a fury. The only problem has been the wind that does not want to quit. It's nice having the redfish as a back-up plan. We made it out to Last Island on Tuesday the 27th and had 89 specks and 5 reds. The specks were taken on double rigged purple /chart bayou chub minnows fished on the bottom around sand bars and rock piles.
Had Mr. Larry Holsey and company from Georgia and we mopped up on the redfish. We fished 2 days and caught over 100 redfish with their 5 man group. Most of them came on beetle spins with purple/chart byaou chubs fished over grass beds in Madison bay below Montegut.
Looking forward to the wind laying down so we can lay a smackdown on the trout. Call for additional reports.
Capt. Anthony 985-857-8552
March 2008
Fished with Mr. Frank Leamon of Tennessee on Feb. 28th out of Dulac. The weather was a cold 50 deg with 20 mph north winds. The tide was the lowest I have seen It in some time. We went to the dead end canals off Lake Boudreaux. We made short work of 5 man limits 25 redfish that weighed 148lbs at Mr. John Escetes fish cleaning scales. The fish were all caught on 50lb power pro line on purple/chart. bayou chub plastics tipped with a piece of fresh shrimp under a cajun thunder rattle cork. Had lots of fun with Mr. Frank and his group of retirees.
Feb. 29th-- Had Mr. Frank Leamon and crew again. The water had come back up 2' overnight due to 15-20mph winds out of the SE. While running through the ponds to get into the dead-end canals we were seeing redfish everywhere. This was a sure sign the fish had left the canals. We sight casted to 20-30 redfish, all some big boys with no takers. They were in only 6" of water and not to cooperative due to high blue skies and no ripple on the water. So with the suggestion of the crew who would rather dunk some dead shrimp we went back to the same canal as the day before and managed 2 redfish. We ended up in another canal and had 20 redfsih and several drum for the day.
March 2nd-- Had the pleasure of fishing with Mr. Roger Smith and son. We were faced with some tough conditions due to howling winds for a few days straight prior to our trip. Ran through Lake decade nasty!!!!! Then we hit Lake Mechant, Jug lake, Lost lake, and had 2 redfish in the boat. Headed back to some protected ponds with pretty water and grass. We managed to get 8 redfish and 4 small bass. The largest redfish was 11lbs caught on Zoom Super Flukes fished in the grass.
Tackle of the month:
Power Pro 50 lb fishing line, Reaction bayou chub minnows in purple/chart, and black and chart, Cajun Thunder rattling corks, Zoom super flukes in baitfish color.
Try the new mustad Ultra point Power Lock Plus weighted hooks in 5/0 with a 1/16 oz weight. They work great with a Zoom super fluke when you need just a little weight to get the bait down to the fish. They distribute the weight right for a true running bait everytime. And with the Mustad 5/0 hook you won't hear about the big one that got away!!!!
April 2008
Fished with Capt. Rob with Top Water Charters on a windy day scouting trip. Boy was it windy. Steady 30 with 40 gusts. Pulled up on a grassline with decent water clarity and caught 2 nice reds in as many casts on the gold bladed beetle spin. Ended the morning with 10 keeper reds and several throwbacks.
On April 15th took my 5 year old son Cade out for a morning of redfishing and his favorite, crabbing!!! When we got in the ponds the water was beautiful, and the redfish were everywhere. It took longer to remove the grass wads off our lines than it took to get another hook-up. Cade threw out and I saw 10 reds fighting for his fluke jerk bait less than 10 feet from the boat. Cade caught and landed 5 reds all by himself. He accused me of not getting the net in time causing him to have longer fights. There was one stretch of pond where we anchored down and the reds would come to us in 6" to 1' of water you could see them coming from 100 yards in the clear water. It was awesome. Then I started wondering why I couldn't get a couple of them to bite, and I noticed I had allready caught and released them from the hook marks. They were just crusing close to the boat. We caught over 30 redfish all 3-10 lbs in a few hours. Then we started chasing some big male crabs with the scoop net in the ponds. We caught 18 monsters, we had trouble seeing them due to the muddy water from all the redfish schools running around the boat. Man what a great day on the water with my son..
